At birth Joshua's name was Hoshea.  Moses gave him the name Joshua which means "The Lord Saves." The New Testament equivalent is "Jesus." Moses was God's servant to lead His people out of bondage in Egypt and through the 40-year wilderness journey.  Now Moses is dead and Joshua must step up to take the lead.  It will require courage and strength.  Three times in this passage God says to him, "Be strong and courageous" because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Christians are leaders in many areas of life:  parents must lead their children at home; workers lead by the example of integrity and honesty; church members encourage others by their faithfulness.  Our world is in great need of Christian leadership at every level.  It is the command of God that we be strong and courageous.  The promises of God will help us.
