When Jesus concluded the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew says "the crowds were amazed at his teaching."  Why were they so amazed?  Because He spoke the truth and they knew it, because He spoke of matters that had eternal importance, and because He spoke with authority. In this last teaching Jesus contrasts a wise and a foolish builder.  The house they were building, of course, represents our lives.  The difference in the two builders is the difference in hearing only and hearing and doing the the teachings of Jesus, and in the foundation they chose.  Both houses had to endure the same storms:  "the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against it."  The house built on the Rock (Jesus) stood firm; the house built on sand "fell with a great crash"
