The experience of Israel as a nation entering into the Promised Land has often been compared to the Christian's struggle to live a victorious Christian life. As Joshua prepared to lead Israel into the battle for Jericho, he met a man with a drawn sword who said that he was the Commander of the Lord's army. This encounter helped Joshua prepare for battle. Joshua bowed down in reverence before this visitor. He asked the right question: "What message does my Lord have for his servant?" And he made the right response--taking off his shoes because he was on holy ground. We are never ready for the battles we face in life until we recognize the holiness of God and are prepared to acknowledge his holiness and our servanthood.
