Zephaniah had a message of judgment for the nation in "the great day of the Lord."  That day would soon come upon the people because of their sins.  But Zephaniah also had a message of good news, a time of rejoicing for the ultimate great day of the Lord at the end of time when judgment would be past and God would dwell with His people.  Scholars say that Zephaniah's message is the John 3:16 of the Old Testament--what began in somber judgment ends with almost unimaginable joy because, "The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save.  He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing."
