Jesus intended for Christians to have a redeeming influence on society. In the Sermon on the Mount He made both these statements: "You are the salt of the earth." and "You are the light of the world." Salt in its container is just salt. It must interact with its environment to have an influence. So it is with Christians. We are to have an impact on our world. But we cannot be salt and light in our world if Jesus is not that in us. Jesus desires to fill us with His Spirit and thus produce all the fruit of the Spirit. He asks two things of us--that we submit to His leadership and His Lordship.
