God gave the prophet Amos a series of visions related to a future judgment of the nation of Israel. They were devastating plagues of locusts and fire, The third vision, recorded in Amos 7, was of a plumbline that God established in Israel. God's standard of righteousness, truth, and holiness was a plumbline against which the nation would be judged. Amos interceded for the nation with the first two judgments, but God would not allow him to do so with the third. "Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel. I will spare them no longer." When a nation moves so far from God's standards there is no recourse but for God's judgment to fall. Until that time, however, it falls to the church to intercede and plead for God's mercy and forgiveness.
