john begins chapter four with the expression "after these things." He uses that several times in Revelation, each time to introduce a new vision. This is the second of seven visions that God gave him of heaven. In this vision he sees the Sovereign Lord on the throne of heaven, being worshiped by four living creatures and twenty-four elders, all surrounding the throne. Worship and praise are the themes of both groups. The living creatures declare who God is in His purity and power. The elders declare what God does as creator of all things. "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."
