"I tell you the truth," Jesus said, "It is for your good that I am going away." That was so because if He did not go away the Holy Spirit would not come. But if He went away, He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them and in them. Jesus told them, "When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment." People do not really like to be convicted of sin. When Jesus was in the world He was the standard of righteousness, but now the world has no real standard of what is right or wrong, so many follow the standards of public opinion. The Holy Spirit convicts us with regard to sin "because men do not believe in me."--the one sin that will keep us out of heaven. If Satan himself is judged at the cross, will God not judge each of us. "It is appointed unto men once to die and after that the judgment." The Holy Spirit convicts the world of the sin of not believing in Jesus. He convicts the world of guilt regarding self-rigteousness apart from the righteousness of Jesus. And He convicts the world of guilt in regard to the judgment all unbelievers will face.
